Glenna Cross, ABC
I've been a professional communicator for
more than 30 years. It's hard to believe the years are going by
so fast. And, it's doubly hard to believe the wonderful
opportunities with which I am presented, engaging and
challenging me every day.
When speaking on an IABC (International
Association of Business Communicators) career planning panel, I
was asked my approach to planning what turned out to be a
successful career. I had to tell the truth... I never had a
plan! I've always followed my curiosity and my values. My
"career plan" evolved from taking on what interested me and
presented opportunities to advance professional communications
in an organization that made a difference in the community.
My career started in advertising and public
relations agencies, where I was exposed to the communication
challenges and needs of all kinds of organizations and a
multitude of tasks. I also worked with, and learned from, some
awesome communications leaders.
I then followed my passion for books and
literacy to a wonderful role at the Calgary Public Library
managing and building the communications function. There I
developed a lasting interest in civic affairs and city
Next, I served a stint in further education (another
area of personal commitment) at SAIT Polytechnic where I managed
communications, but also learned about and led fund development
and alumni relations.
My next step was to Calgary Co-op, a retail
food co-operative, whose values and community commitment struck
a chord. I built a team of amazing communications professionals
and together we moved the reputation of Co-op forward.
Since 1999, I've had the pleasure of building
my own consulting practice. I've focused on capacity building
for communicators, communications organizational design and
structure, matching communicators and jobs, and teaching and
training in a number of areas. Cross Wise Communications is a
collection of the work I like to do most!
